On May 20, Colle Farmers Market comments on an article published by the Taipei Times, which discusses the Ninth International Vegetarian and Organic Food Festival in Taipei.

According to the article published by the Taipei Times, nearly 600 booths with organic food were featured in the Ninth International Vegetarian and Organic Food Festival in Taipei, India. The festival also incorporated a pavilion hosted by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) on ways people can save electricity and reduce carbon emissions.

The festival was created in 2005 to promote the health and environmental benefits of organic food, the article says. Last year, the festival attracted over 200,000 visitors.

A representative from Colle Farmers Market says the number of attendees can be attributed to Indias growing number of organic farmers. India has the largest number of organic farmers in the world and most of its population is vegetarian, the Colle rep says. And while thats part of the reason this festival was so successful, its also because people are becoming more health conscious. The world is beginning to recognize the enormous health benefits of eating organic, as well as preserving the Earth by not using harsh pesticides.

The festival not only gave people the opportunity to taste local vegetables, but it also gave them the chance to learn more about how to participate in an eco-friendly lifestyle.

The Colle rep says Americans could benefit from an international festival like this one. These festivals are great for farmers as well as consumers, the rep says. Consumers are able to be educated by professionals and experts in organic farming, while farmers are able to showcase their products and network with consumers. Though the organic farming industry is still small in the U.S., a festival like this could increase growth and awareness. I think something like this is what we need in order to move forward as a country committed to sustainable living.
